Synopsis:

Thrush breaks into U.N.C.L.E. in an attempt to kill Waverly and prevent him from acting on the intercepted information that Vulcan is going to assassinate Premier Ashumen. Thrush fails in the attack. Waverly assigns Solo to stop Vulcan, and he recruits the last known girlfriend Vulcan permitted himself (ten years earlier, in college), Elaine May Donaldson, to attract/distract Vulcan. Elaine is persuaded to cooperate by her clergyman, who has been asked by his bishop, a friend of Waverly’s to vouch for Solo. “In good conscience, all I can do is vouch for the Bishop!”

Elaine says no way, but next thing we know she’s on a plane to Washington with Solo.

NS arranges for Elaine to have a rack of clothes to choose from, and recommends one for her to wear. She goes to a party at Vulcan’s house, where he throws himself at her.

Alfred Gist and Vulcan recognize Solo as U.N.C.L.E. (but don’t refer to him by name). Elaine warns Solo, and he gives her a drug for Ashumen ’s drink that makes the premier collapse. Elaine’s upset about this.

Solo’s car is rigged by Gist to gas him when he hits 50 mph.

Back at HQ, the (unnamed) communications lady is in a bikini. She takes a message with pen and paper for Waverly. Solo kids her about her sun lamp. The gas goes off, he crashes & staggers back to Elaine’s hotel narrowly missing Vulcan.

Elaine tells Solo that the inspection is on for tomorrow, even without Ashumen . He wants her to get Vulcan to take her to the plant. Elaine wants to back out. Solo understands that she’s afraid—not of Vulcan but of herself—that when the time comes she won’t be able to walk away from the glamour.

NS calls for Vanguard Air Charter Service.

Elaine and Vulcan go to visit the plant. A plane flies over and drops a dummy parachutist who attracts the attention of security. Solo sneaks into the plant. They search, but the dogs are having a bad day. So are the guards. They chase Solo around for a while. Elaine helps him escape from a dead end & the two of them make a run for the car. But Premier Ashumen  is waiting for them with a gun.

Ashumen  is Thrush. It’s Soumarin and Nobuk who must die.

Solo and Elaine are chained to a pipe in a room that will fill with steam.

Premier Ashumen  says “Thrush is my country.” Vulcan yearns for the diplomatic perks that come from being a real country.  They are planning an explosion and fire to Kill Nobuk and Soumarin and destroy Solo’s and Elaine’s bodies.

Elaine: “You mustn’t blame yourself.” Solo: “Of course I don’t blame myself, it had to be done.” NS pounds the pipes apart, shuts off the water and the steam, and they get free. Elaine cries because everybody noticed her at the party and now she’s a wreck and her family never saw her. NS makes an effort (he can barely sit up) and says she was the most beautiful woman there.

Vulcan arrives and makes ready to dispose of the dignitaries. Vulcan and someone (?) try to shut off the machines before the explosion, but they’re too late. Vulcan and Ashumen  apparently die.

Back at the ranch, Solo offers Elaine an invitation to a fancy soiree with her family, but she turns him down. He also has presents for her to take to the family: a doll, a build it yourself radio, and a sweater for Hubby. Elaine runs out to her family & Solo watches a bit wistfully.

He settles down to wait for the plane trip back to New York. The Stewardess pesters him…he ignores her at first.

But we close on the old Solo smile.
